Feeding the World, One Langar at a Time

The Global Day of Seva is a worldwide invitation to put our spiritual values into action through selfless service (seva). On this day, individuals, families, gurdwaras, and communities come together to feed as many people as possible, uplift those in need and foster compassionate, equitable local connections.

That is the maryaadaa (discipline) of langar – that even a king and a beggar can sit together, serve and eat the same food, in the same way. — Siri Singh Sahib, Yogi Bhajan.

The Initiative

In January and February, 2026 sangats from around the world came together to feed as many people as possible, through gurdwaras, homeless shelters, and community gatherings, in the spirit of langar: free food, offered to all, with no distinction.

This was our second Global Day of Seva. It is rooted in a simple and profound truth: when we serve food, we serve the Divine in every person we feed.

Why Langar Matters

Langar is the living expression of seva.

Rooted in the Sikh tradition, langar is a free community meal offered to all people, regardless of background, belief, or circumstance. Everyone is welcomed as an equal.

Langar represents:

  • Equality that honors every human being
  • Compassion that feeds both body and spirit
  • Community created through sharing food and being present
  • Spiritual principles lived through service

Where Seva Happened

From gurdwaras to shelters, from neighborhood kitchens to community halls – langar reached communities across the globe.

A Story of Seva

FROM YOUTH – “It makes me so happy that we can feed people, some of them didn’t have a meal today, we should do this more”.

Global Day of Seva: Feeding the World One Langar at a Time

As part of the Global Day of Seva, one community in Canada brought together a team of 15 youth, ages 17 and 18, to put the spirit of Langar into action. The group spent the day preparing fresh vegetables and assembling more than 60 nutritious vegetarian wraps filled with hummus and a variety of fresh vegetables. The wraps were then personally delivered to a local shelter, where they were distributed to individuals experiencing homelessness.

The experience was both meaningful and inspiring for the youth, who were humbled by how simple acts of service can make a tangible difference in the lives of others. The project demonstrated that with a small group of dedicated volunteers, it is possible to create a significant impact and strengthen the values of compassion, community, and selfless service.

Serve Langar in Your Community

Langar does not end when the Global Day of Seva does. The practice belongs to every Sikh, every day, wherever the sangat lives.

You do not need a large team or a budget. Start where you are.

Serve through a local gurdwara — prepare and distribute Langar-to-Go, or host a seva-inspired community gathering.

Partner with a homeless shelter — serve or deliver a meal, or prepare perishable meals and deliver them directly.

Every time we feed another person, we are living the Guru’s teaching. Many hands, one heart.

Part of a Growing Commitment

Feeding the World, One Langar at a Time is one expression of the seva that flows through our global sangat.
